Qesher Book Club: ‘All Afternoon’
Hosted By: Qesher
Qesher presents a conversation with author Susan Kleinman on her novel “All Afternoon,” the story of Marilyn Weisfeld, a once-promising writer in a tight-knit 1978 Jewish community who abandoned her literary dreams for marriage and motherhood twenty years earlier. Marilyn finds herself torn between the comfort of tradition and the thrill of new possibilities when a bestselling author friend of her husband’s urges her to start writing again. Drawing on childhood recollections and historical research, Kleinman recreates the suburban-Ashkenazi Modern Orthodox Judaism of the 1970s, a moment when Eastern European immigrant lifestyles gave way to the culture of their American-born children and roles and expectations for women were evolving.
