Post-Soviet Jews, Life After the Iron Curtain
Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")
The Community Scholar Program presents a three-part series exploring what has happened to Jewish life across the former Soviet world more than three decades after the collapse of the USSR. Part 1, “The Great Transition: From Soviet to Post-Soviet,” follows the collapse and the communities transformed by migration; Part 2, “Rebuilding the Heart: Religion and Tradition,” explores the revival of synagogues, schools, Hebrew, Shabbat, and Jewish communal life; and Part 3, “Jewish Life Today: From the Baltic States to Central Asia,” travels across the former Soviet republics to discover how Jewish identity is being reinvented in the 21st century. Together, the sessions ask who left, who stayed, what was lost and recovered, and what it means to build a Jewish future after generations of enforced silence.
