Moroccan Memories: A Lens into Lost Jewish Holidays and Handicrafts

Hosted By: Qesher

Qesher explores the outsized role Jewish artisans once played in Morocco’s decorative arts and how their mid-20th-century departure led to the decline of trades such as silversmithing, leatherwork, and textile weaving. Set within this broader legacy, the talk highlights how these traditions are remembered and reinterpreted in the work of Los Angeles–based artist and ethnographer Nessim Sibony. Together, participants will explore handcrafted traditions, holiday customs, and communal rituals that once brought Jewish life in Marrakech to vibrant life.

Qesher

There are Jewish communities all around the globe with their own unique history, culture, places, and most of all, people and stories. All of them different, but sharing so much. The aim of Qesher is to connect these different Jewish traditions, not just to know of each other, but to learn about each other. We believe that there is great value in creating a deeper understanding within the Jewish world and exploring Jewish experiences and identities in all their diversity.
