Modern Yiddish Literature
Hosted By: YIVO
The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a talk by Anita Norich tracing the development of modern Yiddish literature from the early nineteenth century onward. The session examines its major writers, movements, and cultural contexts, from the classic works of Mendele Moykher-Sforim, Sholem Aleichem, and Y.L. Peretz to the competing literary and ideological currents that shaped the field. Norich also explores why women were so often left out of the canon and how multilingualism and translation shaped the literature Yiddish writers created.
