Melton Meets the Moment: Juneteenth, Enslavement, and Exodus

The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a Juneteenth session with educator Lynne Lieberman exploring how nineteenth-century American Jews reading the same sacred texts arrived at such different conclusions about slavery. Beginning with biblical passages that both celebrate liberation and regulate servitude, the session draws on the voices of rabbis, abolitionists, slaveholders, and Jewish leaders of the Civil War era. Through biblical, rabbinic, and historical sources, the conversation examines why some Jews saw abolition as the moral imperative of the Exodus story while others defended slavery as biblically sanctioned.
