Manhattan Sideways: Exploring NYC’s Small Businesses
Hosted By: Congregation Rodeph Sholom
In 2011, Betsy Bober Polivy had a crazy idea to walk the entire original Manhattan Grid, from 1st Street to 155th Street. As she traversed the side streets from the East River to the Hudson, she met the owners behind each of the small businesses and documented their stories. This year, Betsy self-published the book Walking Manhattan Sideways: Side Street Businesses That Have Stood the Test of Time.
Joining Betsy for this program will be Bella Meyer, the owner of floral shop FleursBella and the granddaughter of renowned painter Marc Chagall. The two met when Betsy was walking on 11th Street. Bella will speak about her life growing up in Europe, and her relationship with Chagall, who always painted with a beautiful vase of fresh flowers by his side.
