SUMMARY:Entering the Orchard: How We Read the Talmud
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a two-part series with Rav Johnny Solomon introducing the four classic levels of Torah interpretation known as Pardes — Peshat\, Remez\, Drash\, and Sod. Using a story from Tractate Sanhedrin about a town called Truth\, where no one ever lies and no one dies before their time\, the sessions follow what happens when a visitor tells a small lie to protect his wife’s privacy. The series offers an accessible introduction to the habits of mind that shape Talmud study\, from reading closely and noticing tensions to asking layered questions and searching beneath the text’s surface.

SUMMARY:Seventy One Faces of Torah?
DESCRIPTION:The London School of Jewish Studies explores the long history of biblical interpretation and the enduring question of how many meanings a single text can hold. Tracing debates between advocates of multiple interpretive approaches and defenders of a single “correct” reading\, the session examines the tension between creativity and constraint in Torah study. Participants will consider what is at stake in living with multiple interpretations and whether this plurality is a strength\, a challenge\, or both.

SUMMARY:Korach’s Rebellion: Authority\, Dissent\, and the Erosion of Trust
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a one-hour class with Rabbi Michele Faudem on the rebellion of Korach\, one of the Torah’s most explosive confrontations with Moses and Aaron. Through close reading and discussion\, the session wrestles with enduring questions about when dissent is necessary and when it becomes destructive\, how much trust a community should place in its leaders\, and what happens when principled criticism blurs into personal ambition. Revisiting Moses as a vulnerable and embattled leader\, the class draws out insights about responsibility\, humility\, and what it takes to sustain trust in moments of conflict and division.

SUMMARY:Leadership in an Age of Moral Crisis
DESCRIPTION:The London School of Jewish Studies presents a timely exploration of leadership in times of moral crisis and social breakdown. Drawing on the responses of the Sages after the destruction of the Temple\, the session examines how rabbinic leaders confronted failed authority\, fragmentation\, and ethical decline while reshaping Judaism for life in exile. Participants will consider what this model of moral courage\, communal responsibility\, and long-term vision can teach contemporary societies facing instability and uncertainty.

SUMMARY:Jewish Life in the Confederate South: The Diary of Emma Mordecai
DESCRIPTION:The Community Scholar Program presents a discussion of “The Civil War Diary of Emma Mordecai\,” exploring the life of a complicated figure who was both a staunch defender of Judaism and an ardent Confederate nationalist and slaveowner. The diary captures the messiness of history and the ambiguous place of Jews in the antebellum and Civil War South. The book was initiated by the late Dr. Dianne Ashton\, Professor Emerita of Philosophy and World Religion at Rowan University\, and completed after her passing by Dr. Melissa R. Klapper\, Professor of History at Rowan University.
