SUMMARY:Jews in the Era of Mass Migration with Professor Rebecca Kobrin
DESCRIPTION:Presented by The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History and 70 Faces Media. \nJoin us for a landmark virtual series as we commemorate 250 years of the Jewish experience in America\, exploring the profound ways Jewish identity and the American story have shaped one another. Through a series of monthly conversations over the course of this year with the nation’s leading historians\, we will journey from the arrival of the first colonial settlers to the vibrant\, diverse communities of the modern era. \nOn June 7 we will be joined for a presentation by Professor Rebecca Kobrin on “Jews in the Era of Mass Migration.” \nBetween the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries\, millions of Jews\, along with other Europeans\, decided to uproot themselves from their places of birth and seek their fortunes in new homes around the world. This decision created new cultural and demographic centers for world Jewry\, particularly in the New World\, where by 1920\, New York City represented the densest urban concentration of Jews anywhere in the world. How did these Jewish migrants reshape America? This lecture will explore these questions as it considers the role migration played in reshaping Jewish life along with American culture\, politics and daily life.

SUMMARY:Torah for Our Lives: Training for Moral Agency with the Jewish Hero's Journey
DESCRIPTION:The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies presents a course introducing the first two paths of Jewish heroism — Tov (seeing the essential good) and Avodah (cultivating the substance of self) — as a Torah-based training system for moral agency. Through the archetypes of Moshe\, Adam\, and Eliezer the servant\, participants will learn to anchor their vision in what’s worth fighting for and build the inner discipline to serve it. The course offers new frames for understanding and daily practices aimed at closing the gap between intention and action.

SUMMARY:Eastern European Jewish Immigrant Bankers and the Shaping of American Finance\, 1873–1930
DESCRIPTION:The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a discussion of “Credit to the Nation\,” a history of Jewish immigrant lenders in early twentieth-century New York. The book examines how immigrants from the Russian Empire created informal credit networks to help fellow Jews travel to the United States and secure financial support after arrival. Drawing on multilingual archival sources\, the study explores how these practices helped shape both American Jewish life and the broader U.S. financial system.

SUMMARY:History of the Blood Libel From Middle Ages to Today
DESCRIPTION:The term “blood libel” is in the headlines these days — but do we know the history behind it? \nDon’t miss this rare chance to learn the history from Prof. Elissa Bemporad\, an acclaimed professor and three-time National Jewish Book Award winner. \nFocusing on the “blood libel” and its evolution\, this course will investigate the history of anti-Jewish conspiracies\, from the early Middle Ages to the modern era.\nOver four hour-long online sessions\, we will analyze the specific social\, economic and political contexts that catalyzed the false accusation of ritual murder — and we’ll dissect intersections with other manifestations of antisemitism\, ranging from the charge of deicide to the myth of Judeo-Bolshevism during and after World War II. \nMondays from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. ET\, June 8 – 29

SUMMARY:Talmud: Cracks in Authority through Four Talmudic Lives
DESCRIPTION:The Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies presents a four-part series examining four Talmudic figures who expose different cracks in authority: Elazar ben Azariah\, the Imposter who feels unqualified; Rabbi Akiva\, the Outsider who never fully believes he belongs; Imma Shalom\, the Insider who refuses to look away; and Rabba bar bar Hana\, the Storyteller who turns to myth when law falters. The Gemara preserves these figures as warnings\, experiments\, and provocations. The series asks what happens to Torah when certainty breaks down.

SUMMARY:Liberal Democracy in Crisis: What Went Wrong?
DESCRIPTION:Siegal Lifelong Learning presents a class examining the crisis facing liberal democracy in the years since the end of the Cold War. The session explores how events such as 9/11 and the 2008 financial crisis fueled the rise of populist leaders who promised “more democracy” while weakening liberal institutions. Through case studies of the United States\, Hungary\, and Israel\, the program asks what went wrong and what may come next.

SUMMARY:Jewish Poland: Stories of Survival
DESCRIPTION:Daniela Gerson met her wife\, Talia Inlender\, at a picnic in Los Angeles\, not knowing that 75 years earlier their grandparents had left homes only blocks away from each other in a small Polish town\, and fled east to Ukraine. The Gersons and the Inlenders went on parallel odysseys of 5\,000 miles to survive the Holocaust – one that would\, after a deceitful loyalty test from Stalin\, put them on cattle cars to a Soviet Gulag\, years in limbo in Central Asia\, and ended\, after a decade on the run\, with new lives built on secrets and lies. \nPart genealogical detective story\, part gripping history\, and part contemporary reporting on war-torn territories\, The Wanderers chronicles Daniela’s journey to unearth this past with her wife\, and reveal its echoes in still-contested lands from Ukraine to Israel. The Wanderers is a groundbreaking narrative history\, and a meditation on how a home left behind and a desperate journey to survive reverberates across borders and through generations. \n\n\n\nDaniela will be joined in conversation with Lisa Keys\, Special Projects Editor at 70 Faces Media. \nAbout Daniela Gerson:\nAn award-winning reporter whose work has appeared in The New York Times\, Der Spiegel\, Public Radio International\, and the Financial Times\, Daniela Gerson is an associate professor of journalism at California State University\, Northridge\, and editor-at-large at Zócalo Public Square. She previously worked as an editor at the LA Times and an immigration reporter for the New York Sun. She is also co-founder of the immigration newsletter Migratory Notes.
