SUMMARY:Ghosts of a Holy War: The 1929 Massacre in Palestine That Ignited the Arab-Israeli Conflict
DESCRIPTION:The Community Scholar Program presents a one-hour event with journalist Yardena Schwartz on her new book\, “Ghosts of a Holy War: The 1929 Massacre in Palestine That Ignited the Arab-Israeli Conflict.” The book began with a box of century-old letters and traces the story of an American Jew killed in the 1929 Hebron massacre\, a moment Schwartz argues helped shape the modern conflict. Drawing on archival material\, interviews\, and historical context\, she connects this early episode to current events and the ongoing struggle for peace.

SUMMARY:Ethics Under Fire: Jewish Law in Times of War
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a three-part course on Jewish ethics and the moral dilemmas of warfare. Taught by Rabbi Dr. Danny Schiff\, the series explores classical sources and contemporary challenges\, asking what Jewish tradition says about war\, civilian harm\, and moral restraint. Each session tackles a core question—from when war is permitted to how we treat enemies and evaluate modern military practices.

SUMMARY:Hatred\, Holiness & the Image of God
DESCRIPTION:The Haberman Institute for Jewish Studies presents a program exploring sinat chinam—baseless hatred—as a root cause of division and destruction\, drawing from classical and contemporary Jewish texts. Rabbi Lauren Tuchman will examine how recognizing the divine image in each person can help heal fractured communities and relationships. Through multi-vocal learning and reflection on Tisha B’Av and Yom Kippur\, the session asks what might be possible if we truly honored the sacredness of every human soul.
