Jonah in Nineveh: History or Parable?

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning presents a session with biblical scholar and archaeologist Dr. Dorian Alexander placing the story of Jonah against the history, archaeology, and culture of the eighth-century B.C.E. Neo-Assyrian Empire. From the enormous scale of ancient Nineveh to political upheaval, famine, and even a dramatic solar eclipse, the session examines evidence that sheds new light on Jonah’s mission to the “great city.” Together, participants will consider whether Jonah is history, parable, or perhaps a more complicated combination of the two.
