SUMMARY:The Simchat Torah Flag From Biblical Roots to Modern Israeli Icon
DESCRIPTION:The Community Scholar Program presents a lecture on the colorful and symbolic Simchat Torah flag\, a tradition rooted in biblical and rabbinic imagery of the degel\, or banner. Emerging in the late 19th century\, the flag became a joyful emblem of continuity in Ashkenazi communities\, later infused with Zionist and Israeli symbolism. Its evolving imagery—from Torah scrolls and the 12 Tribes to Herzl\, Nordau\, and the heroes of the Six Day War—reflects shifting Jewish ideals\, with modern designs now expressing the diversity of Jewish life.

SUMMARY:Reel Culture: The History of Israeli Cinema
DESCRIPTION:Discover the rich history and legacy of Israeli film through this online class with a top expert.\nHow is film molded by national memory — and how does film create it? \nThis course traces the development of cinema in Israel/Palestine from the 1930s to the present\, examining how films reflect and shape cultural identity\, political tensions and social change. \nProf. Olga Gershenson\, a leader in the study of Jewish film history\, will begin by discussing early Zionist cinema then explore the “bourekas” ethnic comedies of the 1960s-70s\, such as “Sallah” (1964). \nThe 1980s-90s brought serious social dramas addressing Holocaust memory and the Palestinian Wave\, with films like “Wedding in Galilee” (1987). The 2000s saw international recognition for directors like Eytan Fox\, Joseph Cedar\, and Eran Kolirin. \n \nRecent developments include Israeli horror films and films with a Palestinian point of view. The course will even include cinematic responses to Oct. 7. \nTogether\, we’ll examine how cinema functions as a form of memory\, and we’ll explore epic themes of land\, migration and conflict. \nClass will meet at 7 p.m. ET: 10/13\, 10/21\, 10/28\, 11/4

SUMMARY:A New Story for the Evolution of Human Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Kabbalah Experience presents a program exploring how Kabbalists have long used metaphor to expand and reimagine the traditional interpretation of Torah. The session considers their radical teaching that a “new Torah” can be revealed by treating the text as fluid and open to new configurations. Using the story of Eve and Adam in the Garden of Eden\, the program will model how re-telling biblical narratives foreshadows the spiritual and moral evolution of humankind.

SUMMARY:'My Father’s Paradise: A Journey into Jewish Kurdistan'
DESCRIPTION:The Community Scholar Program presents a conversation with journalist and author Ariel Sabar about his award-winning book “My Father’s Paradise: A Son’s Search for His Jewish Past in Kurdish Iraq.” Blending memoir and history\, the book follows Sabar and his father—a Jewish scholar from a remote Kurdish village—as they uncover the story of one of the world’s oldest and most isolated Jewish communities. SUMMARY:'Yiddish Pills' and Summer Thrills: Reconstituting Yiddishism at Camp Hemshekh
DESCRIPTION:The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a lecture on how postwar Jewish leaders viewed summer camps as vital to preserving authentic Jewish culture amid fears of assimilation and suburbanization. The talk explores how Yiddishists\, dedicated to sustaining Yiddish culture in America\, helped shape these educational spaces and created programs like Camp Hemshekh to revive Yiddish language and identity. This event is part of YIVO’s ongoing series connected to its digitization of the Jewish Labor and Political Archives\, a major collection documenting Jewish political and cultural life in Europe and the United States.

SUMMARY:TORN: Online Film Screening and Director Q and A
DESCRIPTION:In this exclusive JTA event\, you’ll watch the acclaimed film “TORN” live on Zoom and then hear directly from the director and others involved in the movie!\n  \nAfter Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attacks\, artists and activists put up posters with the faces of Israeli hostages across New York City.
