Inside Kosher Slaughter: A Shochet’s Guide to Tractate Chullin
Hosted By: My Jewish Learning
You’re invited to join My Jewish Learning and Rabbi Shlomo Zacharow for a comprehensive overview of Tractate Chullin, the tractate of the Talmud concerned with the slaughter of animals, from the perspective of a practicing shochet (Jewish ritual slaughterer).
We will explore the core legal principles governing kosher slaughter, alongside detailed attention to animal anatomy and the mechanics of proper slaughter. Using diagrams, photographs and hands-on analysis, students will gain a clear and concrete understanding of how the materials in Tractate Chullin are implemented in practice.
Rabbi Shlomo Zacharow is a certified shochet (kosher slaughterer) who also trains others in that role. He founded the Sacred Slaughter Institute to make this profession accessible to a broader audience. Rabbi Zacharow is also the immediate past chairman of the Israel Rabbinical Assembly’s Law Committee and serves as Av Beit Din of its Tribunal for Divorces. He also teaches at the Schechter Institute and Conservative Yeshiva. Rabbi Zacharow lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Dafniella, and their children.
