In Defense of Women: A Jewish Dramatist’s Perspective
Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")
The Community Scholar Program presents a discussion of “In Defense of Women,” a 16th-century poem by Italian Jewish dramatist Leone De’ Sommi Portaleone that addresses the role of women in drama and the cultural dynamics of a moment when women were emerging on the theatrical stages of Northern Italy, Rome, and Venice through the commedia dell’arte. Dr. Erith Jaffe-Berg, in dialogue with theatre dybbuk’s artistic director Aaron Henne, guides participants through the work and the author’s biography and position in society. The conversation connects the poem’s themes to both historical and contemporary questions of equity and belonging.
