How a Jew Reads the Torah
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning hosts Professor Ziva Hassenfeld on the distinctive Jewish practice of reading and interpretation, beginning with a few words spoken by Moses in the book of Exodus and watching as a Hasidic master transforms them into a teaching about humility and our relationship with God. The session examines a Jewish understanding of Torah in which meaning emerges through the encounter between text and reader, rather than being predetermined. It considers how the act of reading itself can become an act of creativity, renewal, and sacred significance.
