Hilkiah’s Discovery: Archaeology and the Mystery of Deuteronomy

Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning

The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a session with archaeologist and biblical scholar Dr. Dorian W. Alexander on the scroll uncovered more than 2,600 years ago by the High Priest Hilkiah during renovations to the Temple in Jerusalem, and whether the “Book of the Law” he discovered was the Book of Deuteronomy. Drawing on biblical texts, archaeology, and ancient Near Eastern inscriptions, Dr. Alexander compares Deuteronomy with the political treaties and loyalty oaths of neighboring empires. The session explores how Israel transformed the language of kings, contracts, and political power into a revolutionary vision of covenant with God, along with the dramatic reforms of King Josiah that followed.
