SUMMARY:Hidden Identities: The Story of Crypto-Jews and Forced Converts
DESCRIPTION:Case Western Reserve University’s Siegal Lifelong Learning presents a course on the pivotal turning point in Iberian Jewish history that began with the violent attacks of 1391 and forced mass conversions to Christianity\, creating communities of Conversos or anusim who lived between identities and often maintained Jewish practices in secret. Participants will examine the social\, religious\, and political consequences\, including the expulsions of 1492 and 1497 and the rise of the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions. The course also offers insight into the resilience of hidden Jewish communities and the lasting impact of persecution\, identity\, and survival in early modern Spain and Portugal.
