Hayom Harat Olam: Creation, Science, and Rosh Hashanah

The Community Scholar Program presents a discussion on what the High Holy Day liturgy and Jewish thought say about creation, and whether Judaism supports, challenges, or transcends the claims of young-earth creationism. Rosh Hashanah invites us to think about creation beyond chronology, with the liturgy proclaiming Hayom Harat Olam (“Today is the conception of the world”) and the Torah and Haftarah readings centering on the births of Isaac and Samuel. The session considers how these themes speak to the roughly 38–42% of Americans who believe, based on a literal reading of Genesis 1, that the world was created within the last 10,000 years.
