Hannah Arendt and The Human Condition
Hosted By: My Jewish Learning
What does it mean to truly be in touch with the world around us in 2026? The Jewish philosopher Hannah Arendt can tell us.
Originally conceived as “Amor Mundi,” or love of the world, Hannah Arendt’s 1958 book “The Human Condition” is a searching meditation on what it means to share the Earth with others.
In this new My Jewish Learning online course with Arendt expert and biographer Samantha Rose Hill, you will dive into this iconic text, which remains as timely as ever — and along the way, you’ll learn about how Arendt’s Jewish roots informed her acclaimed philosophical writings.
In “The Human Condition,” Arendt examines the conditions under which freedom in the modern world might be saved or lost, against the backdrop of technological acceleration, growing alienation, and a pervasive sense of rootlessness and loneliness in our everyday lives.
Drawing our attention to an array of uniquely human acts — promises, forgiveness, thinking, poetry, art and judgment — Arendt offers a vocabulary for thinking about what it means to be human today, while asking us to simply “stop and think what we are doing.”
