Hannah and Jewish Man Reading: Painting Nostalgia in 19th Century Europe
Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")
This Community Scholar Program talk brings together two compelling paintings, Hannah and Jewish Man Reading, displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. These “very Jewish” works were created by artists who found success in secular society through other subjects, yet were sometimes drawn to traditional Jewish scenes and figures. The session explores how depictions of Jewish life fit into their broader careers and what they reveal about the journeys of Jewish artists in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
