Golden Calf, Clouds of Glory

The Community Scholar Program presents a session exploring the rich midrashic history of the “clouds of glory” in which the Israelites were enveloped during their forty years in the wilderness. The protective clouds vanish after the sin of the Golden Calf and are restored as the people engage in the creative work of building the Tabernacle, a dialectic of loss and recovery that ultimately informs the festival of Sukkot and its association with “exceeding joy.” The session draws on psychoanalytic understandings of the human experience of absence and presence.
