Case Western Reserve University’s Siegal Lifelong Learning presents a course exploring the transformation of Jewish mysticism in the early modern era, tracing the rise of Safed as the leading center of mystical creativity following the expulsion of Jews from Spain and the spread of its teachings across Europe. The sessions examine the groundbreaking ideas of Moses Cordovero and Isaac Luria and Italy’s role as a center of transmission, revealing how Safedian mysticism circulated, adapted, and flourished throughout Central Europe. Reading materials will be provided before each lecture.
