Examining Israeli Identity through Film and Television

Israeli cinema has had a rapid expansion in both the scope of its content and its audience. During the last two decades, Israeli filmmakers have turned their cameras to personal, humanistic stories and social issues, such as feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, ethnic assimilation, and social alienation. In this course, learners will watch a curated list of films/TV shows before each class and, guided by Israeli media expert Amy Kronish, analyze their content and context. With these films as the launching point, we can better understand how new themes and ideas can be seen as adding complexity, nuance, and humanity to the political climate.
