SUMMARY:Fantasy Life Screening and Q&A with Director Matthew Shear
DESCRIPTION:Watch one of the year’s best Jewish indie comedies\, and hear from up-and-coming star Matthew Shear! \nFirst-time writer-director-actor Matthew Shear (who has appeared in films by Noah Baumbach and Nathan Silver) uses Jewish humor to create a heartfelt tale of connection in “Fantasy Life\,” co-starring Amanda Peet. \nPeet plays Dianne\, a depressed middle-aged mom who meets newly laid-off paralegal Sam (Shear) when he’s hired — by his therapist — to babysit her three daughters while her husband (Alessandro Nivola) is away chasing his dreams to become a rock star. As Sam and Dianne find surprising intimacies by bonding over shared neuroses about lives they no longer feel they control\, “Fantasy Life” reveals itself as a deeply honest character study. \nThe film won the SXSW Narrative Feature Audience Award\, and its impressive cast also stars Judd Hirsch\, Andrea Martin\, Bob Balaban\, Jessica Harper\, and Zosia Mamet. \n \n  \nYour ticket comes with: \n\nAccess to view the film online on May 18 at 7:00 p.m. ET\nAccess to a Q&A interview with Matthew Shear directly after the screening\nA recording of the Q&A portion of the event

SUMMARY:How the Sages Transformed Shavuot
DESCRIPTION:The London School of Jewish Studies presents a class exploring why the Torah describes Shavuot as an agricultural festival\, with no explicit mention of the giving of the Torah at Sinai. The session examines this striking omission and contrasts it with the detailed biblical command to remember the Exodus on Passover. Participants will learn how the Sages transformed Shavuot into the Time of the Giving of the Torah and how that shift helped shape Judaism as it is practiced today.

SUMMARY:The Nate Geller Memorial Lecture: US\, Israel\, Iran War and Aftermath
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to attend The Nate Geller Memorial Lecture\, “US\, Israel\, Iran War and Aftermath\,” on Tuesday\, May 19\, at 6:00 p.m. ET. \nThe program will feature David Makovsky\, Ziegler Distinguished Fellow at The Washington Institute and director of the Koret Project on Arab-Israel Relations\, in conversation with Ami Eden\, CEO of 70 Faces Media. \nDespite significant tactical successes in the campaign against Iran\, a long-term resolution remains complex. While Iran’s missile production capabilities have been severely impacted\, the nation maintains highly enriched uranium and strategic control over the Strait of Hormuz. Additionally\, while U.S. and Israeli military cooperation has deepened\, recent domestic polling and Senate votes indicate a growing divergence in public opinion. Our discussion will examine the future of this conflict and its impact on U.S.-Israel relations. \nWe look forward to your participation in this important conversation. \n \nAbout Our Speaker: David Makovsky is the Ziegler Distinguished Fellow at The Washington Institute and director of the Koret Project on Arab-Israel Relations. He is also an adjunct professor in Middle East studies at Johns Hopkins University’s Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and president of the board for the National Library of Israel’s U.S. affiliate (NLI-USA). In 2013-2014\, he worked in the Office of the U.S. Secretary of State\, serving as a senior advisor to the Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations. \nThis lecture is presented in memory of our treasured 70 Faces Media colleague\, Nate Geller z”l\, who passed away in January 2022. Nate was a passionate supporter of Israel and a devoted Jewish learner. Through this annual lecture series\, we hope to honor Nate’s memory for many years to come.\n \nIf you’d like to donate to 70 Faces Media in support of this lecture and in memory of Nate Geller\, you can do so here.

SUMMARY:Laugh Tracks 2026: A History of Jewish Musical Satire
DESCRIPTION:From the Gershwins to Rachel Bloom\, Jews have given us generations of profound musical comedy. \nIs there something distinctly Jewish about musical satire written by Jewish songwriters? No. Case closed\, move along now\, nothing to see here. \nOr… Yes. \nPopular music often reflects traditional Jewish values like social justice (“Sail Away\,” Randy Newman’s horrifying/gorgeous evocation of the slave trade)\, love of learning (Tom Lehrer racing through the periodic table of the elements to a Gilbert and Sullivan melody)\, dealing with evil (“No Way To Stop It\,” Rodgers and Hammerstein’s acerbic critique of political accomodation)\, and even the Holocaust (“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” creator Rachel Bloom’s “Remember That We Suffered”). \n \nIn his return to My Jewish Learning\, celebrated screenwriter David Misch is back with another multimedia presentation that features songs from a wide range of artists — Tom Lehrer\, Stephen Sondheim\, Phil Ochs\, Mel Brooks\, Madeline Kahn\, Sheldon Harnick\, Rachel Bloom and Bob Dylan (singing for Christmas) — in an equally wide variety of genres: movies\, TV\, Broadway\, folk\, polka and even country. \nPlus\, in the spirit of religious pluralism\, we’ll hear from a few non-Jews\, including John Lennon\, Patti Lupone and an all-Nazi jazz band. So join us for a tuneful\, laugh-filled show that asks the question “Wait\, Dylan sang a Christmas carol? And John Lennon sang in Hebrew?!” \n
