Eating with Our Ancestors: Summertime Edition
Hosted By: The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning
The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Education presents a summer session with Lorne Opler exploring the foods of the biblical pantry, including lentils, beans, cucumbers, melons, garlic, pistachios, and almonds. Drawing on biblical texts, ancient food history, and modern nutritional insights, the session traces how these ingredients nourished daily life in ancient Israel, from Jacob’s lentil stew to the Israelites’ longing for cucumbers and melons in Egypt. Lorne will also share seasonal recipes for outdoor dining, including chilled cucumber soup, black bean and quinoa salad, lentil tacos, garlic pasta, and pistachio-almond desserts.
