SUMMARY:Chop Suey on Shabbat: How American Jews Embraced Chinese Food 
DESCRIPTION:The Wyner Family Jewish Heritage Center presents a program on the long and lively relationship between American Jews and Chinese food\, beginning with their earliest encounters in the early 20th century. Curhan Scholar Shiyong Lu will explore how Jews embraced\, adapted\, and sometimes reinvented the cuisine\, and how restaurants and home cooks negotiated its popularity alongside its violation of kashrut. The talk will compare the evolution of this cross-cultural exchange in New York and Boston and show how American Chinese food became a bridge between the two communities.
