SUMMARY:Reconciling Identities: Marcel Janco and the Romanian Avant-Garde in the Interwar Years
DESCRIPTION:The Fritz Ascher Society for Persecuted\, Ostracized and Banned Art presents a talk by Dr. Miholca on the artistic and historical significance of Marcel Janco and the Romanian avant-garde. The session highlights how Jewish artists and writers combined their Jewish identity with an international avant-garde vision through influential Dadaist and Constructivist magazines\, and how growing alienation drove many into exile\, including Janco\, who fled to Palestine in 1941 to escape the Holocaust.

SUMMARY:How to Do Things with Kavanah: J.L. Austin and the Communicative Activity of Performing Mitzvot
DESCRIPTION:Valley Beit Midrash presents a session exploring kavanah — usually translated as “intention” — in the performance of mitzvot\, and particularly in Jewish prayer. The often-used but rarely explained term is illuminated through the speech act theory of Oxford philosopher and architect of the Normandy invasion J. L. Austin\, articulated in his 1955 William James Lectures at Harvard and later published as “How to Do Things with Words.”

SUMMARY:Melton Meets the Moment: Altalena Resurfaced
DESCRIPTION:The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning presents a session with Israel educator Daniella Gefen on the Altalena Affair\, revisited as the wreck itself is about to be raised from the Mediterranean after 78 years. The session explores how\, in June 1948\, a confrontation over the ship\, its weapons\, and who controlled them brought the young state perilously close to internal conflict\, forcing questions about authority\, unity\, and the use of force. As another Israeli election approaches\, the session asks why the divisions of 1948 feel so resonant today and what this contested episode can teach us about the bonds that hold a nation together when its people profoundly disagree.

SUMMARY:Connecting Through Memory: A Yizkor Workshop for Yom Kippur
DESCRIPTION:SVIVAH presents a Yizkor workshop exploring why remembering those we have lost is part of Yom Kippur and how the memorial service has been part of High Holiday prayers for centuries. The evening includes guided meditation\, writing\, and discussion to deepen the intentionality that Yizkor holds\, with no need to share unless participants choose to. The workshop is intended for anyone who has lost someone dear to them\, with no previous experience with formal prayer service or knowledge of Hebrew required.

SUMMARY:Jews and the Notorious Five Points: A Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy presents a walking tour with urban historian and educator Bradley Shaw through Manhattan’s notorious Five Points neighborhood\, memorialized in Martin Scorsese’s 2002 film “Gangs of New York” and one of the worst slums that ever existed. Before the great Eastern European migration to the Lower East Side from 1880 to 1920\, immigrant Jews with no money settled and built synagogues within the confines of this slum\, in what is today’s Chinatown. The tour explores how this diverse group of residents dealt with the squalid and unsanitary conditions of “The Ould Sixth Ward.”

SUMMARY:The Life and Times of an Early Music Pioneer: Noah Greenberg
DESCRIPTION:Case Western Reserve University’s Siegal Lifelong Learning presents a session on Noah Greenberg\, director of the New York Pro Musica\, a leading early music ensemble of the 1950s and 60s that brought historically informed performances of 13th- to 17th-century music to wider audiences than it had ever known. Born in Poland\, raised in the Jewish communities of the Bronx\, and intellectually formed in socialist and Trotskyist circles of 1930s and 1940s New York\, Greenberg viewed early music not as old-fashioned or religious but as progressive. The talk explores his life\, musical projects\, and recordings.
