Chalk, Cabbages and Cheese
Hosted By: London School of Jewish Studies (LSJS)

Three new English translations of the Tanach have appeared recently: the literary translation of Robert Alter in 2019, the translation and commentary led by Rabbi Steinsaltz zt”l in 2020, and the updated Koren Hebrew/English Tanach due to be published in September 2021, for which Rabbi Sacks zt”l was responsible for the Torah section.
These translations are as different as chalk, cabbages and cheese. What is the underlying purpose of each one, and which should you have on your shelf? By studying select phrases and passages, and grounding these works in historical context, this lecture will give you a deeper understanding of the art and value of biblical translation.
