Book Launch Event — Jewish Women at Home in the World: Gender, Judaism, and American Identity in the Rise of Mass Tourism

Hosted By: Orange County Jewish Community Scholar Program ("CSP")

The Community Scholar Program hosts historian and author Dr. Melissa R. Klapper for the launch of her new book, “Jewish Women at Home in the World: Gender, Judaism, and American Identity in the Rise of Mass Tourism.” Between the mid-19th and mid-20th centuries, expanding opportunities for international travel enabled increasing numbers of American Jewish women to study abroad, visit ancestral homes, participate in international movements, work overseas, and embark on independent and organized tours. Drawing on diaries, letters, memoirs, photographs, and other archival sources, Dr. Klapper illuminates how travel broadened these women’s horizons, challenged traditional gender roles, and strengthened Jewish identity.
