Antisemitism and the Emergency Quota Act of 1921

Hosted By: Walnut Street Synagogue

Walnut Street Synagogue explores how, after World War I, hundreds of thousands of European Jews sought refuge in the United States to escape violence and poverty. Influenced by antisemitic fears of radicalism and conspiracy, American consuls and State Department officials promoted reports portraying Jewish immigrants as a threat. These efforts contributed to the 1921 Emergency Quota Act, which later blocked many Jews from entering the country as they tried to flee the Holocaust.
