A Very Jewish Christmas: Jesus in Modern Jewish Literature

Hosted By: YIVO

The YIVO Institute for Jewish Research presents a program on how modern Jewish writers grappled with Jesus as both a symbol of persecution and an “authentic national Jew,” a figure whose suffering and resistance shaped new ways of thinking about Jewish identity. The talk examines how portrayals of Jesus reflected major transformations in Jewish life, showing how he came to serve ideological, theological, aesthetic, political, social, and psychological functions tied to Jewish-Christian history as well as to evolving national identities in the diaspora and in Israel. A kosher Chinese food dinner will follow the presentation.
