A Neighborhood Within — The Sephardic Lower East Side
The Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy presents a new walking tour as part of Festival Sefarad exploring the Sephardic history of the Lower East Side, where more than 20,000 Sephardic Jews from Turkey, Syria, Greece, and the Balkans settled alongside the wave of Ashkenazi immigrants between 1881 and 1924. A 1936 Columbia University study described the area around Rivington and Allen Streets as the most vibrant Sephardic hub in the nation. The tour is part of a month-long, city-wide celebration of Jewish joy made possible by the UJA-Federation of New York.
