Sderot in the News

Yesterday evening, I had one of those rare moments when I found myself watching the evening news (Truth be told, it was in between watching two shows on DVR). The friendly weekend anchor on WABC 7 was reading the world news stories when suddenly I heard her mention rockets landing in Israel. My ears peaked up, but then she spoke about the city of “strot.”

Yup, “strot.” It begins like string and rhymes with cot.

Now I don’t expect local newscasters to have an in-depth knowledge of foreign word pronunciation. But this was pretty butchered. I only recognized what she was talking about when the graphic came up saying “Sderot.”

I was also wondering how this story made the newscast. Fortunately this rocket did not kill anyone and little damage was reported. But this was the first mention of rockets in Sderot I’d ever heard on a local news show. Either it was a slow Sunday night or those good folks at the Sderot Media Center are finally getting their message out.
