Election Roundup

  • Just in: According to ABC News and Fox News, Rahm Emanuel has been offered the position of President Obama’s Chief of Staff.
  • As of 9:30 EST, Al Franken has lost to incumbent Norm Coleman (both Jews, but only one played an evangelical minister in a major motion picture) in one of Minnesota’s tightest races ever, winning by fewer than 800 votes. edit: Jeremy says it’s now down to 600, and Rev. Smalley — uh, Franken — is requesting a recount.
  • Proposition 8, the measure in California which would make gay marriage illegal, looks to have passed — but by a narrow margin.
  • The blind rabbi who was running for Congress in New Jersey lost his bid.
  • Two new Jewish congressmen were elected, including Jared Polis, 33, who is — according to JTA — “the first openly gay non-incumbent male elected to Congress.” (What that means is that he’s not Barney Frank, who is openly gay and a Congressman — and male — but was elected before he came out.)
  • And, of course, the Jewlicious Barack, Arack and Borekas party. Just because it’s a damn cool name.
