_(Hebrew, 'one who concludes') Term referring to a person who concludes the reading in the SYNAGOGUE and to the reading itself. The maphtir first reads a portion of the TORAH
(usually a repetition of the last three verses of the portion assigned for the day) and then the HAFTARAH.
