U.N. Security Council Resolution 242
The United Nations responds to Israel's territorial gains in the Six Day
War.
Resolution 242, adopted unanimously by the United Nations
Security Council, was the result of heated negotiation and compromise. One
controversy surrounded what specific territory the U.N. was demanding Israel
return. In the end, the issue was left intentionally vague: The clause calling
for Israel to withdraw from "all the territories" it occupied in the
war was changed to demand Israel remove its army "from territories occupied in the recent conflict." This
resolution became the basis for negotiations and other efforts to end
the Arab-Israeli conflict.
