Blessing over Putting on a Tallit (Prayer Shawl)
Birkhot hamitzvot: Blessings
recited prior to performing certain mitzvot (commandments)
Before putting on your tallit (prayer shawl), hold
it in front of you with the neckpiece facing you, and recite the blessing
below. Some then kiss the corners of the neckpiece or cover their head with the
tallit before laying it over their shoulders.
Barukh ata adonai
Blessed are You, Lord
Eloheinu melekh
ha'olam
Our God, Ruler of the
universe
Asher kid'shanu
b'mitzvotav,
Who has sanctified us
with God's commandments,
V'tzivanu
l'hit'ateif batzitzit.
And has commanded us
to wrap ourselves in fringes.
