Blessing over Shabbat Candles
Birkhot hamitzvot: Blessings
recited prior to performing certain mitzvot (commandments)
Light the Shabbat (Sabbath) candles, wave your hands
three times as if gathering the light toward you, then cover your eyes and
recite the following blessing:
Barukh ata adonai
Blessed are You, Lord
Eloheinu melekh
ha'olam
Our God, Ruler of the
universe
Asher kid'shanu
b'mitzvotav,
Who has sanctified us
with God's commandments,
V'tzivanu l'hadlik
neir shel shabbat.
And has commanded us
to light Shabbat candles.
