Jewish Child Partisans In The Holocaust

Hosted By: The Siegal Lifelong Learning Program at Case Western Reserve University

Jewish children in German-occupied Eastern Europe during World War II and the Holocaust (1939–1945) were hunted like prey and ran for their lives. Among those who survived were children who joined anti-German partisan groups in the forests of Eastern Europe. Their unlikely survival involved a combination of circumstance, bravery, ingenuity and pure luck. The majority were teenagers, although many were younger. This talk will draw from David Rosen’s recently published book, Jewish Child Soldiers in the Bloodlands of Europe, which tells the stories of these child soldiers, and shows how their experiences directly inform two contemporary concerns about children in the modern world: the role of child soldiers in warfare, and the agency of children more generally.
