			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When you tell someone that <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Heresy-High-Beam-Confessions-ebook/dp/B00804NIMK/ref=215live365-20">you used to do gymnastics</a>, she frequently answers that she, too, did it. When she was seven. And hadn’t thought about it in years. The implication is clear — gymnastics is the sort of sport you’re supposed to outgrow. In most instances, you <a rel="attachment wp-att-649" href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/2012/05/14/a-nice-jewish-girl-on-the-balance-beam/heresy-meyers/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-649" title="heresy-meyers" src="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/files/2012/05/heresy-meyers-250x300.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="300" /></a>start doing it before you know how to sign your own name and it’s over by your first adolescent growth spurt, joining the childhood hobby trash heap, which in my case includes rollerblading and playing with Barbie dolls.</p>
<p>But in my case, I couldn’t seem to shake the sport unlike the rest of my practice peers, who ended their involvement with gymnastics by the end of high school. There I was, about to start grad school in Creative Nonfiction at twenty-three, still checking the online message boards devoted to the sport daily in order to learn which Romanian gymnast had a new vault or who was injured and or who quit and so on. (The gymnastics community, both online and in real life, is especially tight knit for the same reasons that Jews tend to cluster together — there are so few of us who give a damn.)</p>
<p>As I was trying to figure out the topic for the first essay I wanted to write for my workshop, my mind drifted to the sport, which I hadn’t really written about much (even if I talked about it ad nauseum and watched YouTube videos of competitions from two decades prior merely to admire the way a particular Soviet pointed her toes). Hey, I said to myself, I’m still as obsessed with gymnastics in my 20s as I was at seven. In a very Seinfeldian way, I wondered — What’s that about?</p>
<p>So I wrote my first essay exploring the role of the sport in my life. Like <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/texts/Bible/Torah/Genesis.shtml">Genesis</a>, I started at the beginning, or at least what I thought was the beginning — my seemingly coming-out-of-nowhere obsession with gymnastics. In those earliest examinations, it seemed like I had woken up one day and decided that I must learn how to flip over my hands. It was a pretty unsophisticated piece, both in writing and insight, and thankfully none of it made its way into any formally published work.</p>
<p>But even in those early efforts, what was becoming very clear was the role that my family’s strict observance of <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/Denominationalism/Orthodox.shtml">Orthodox Jewish</a> rules was playing in my participation in the sport and how it added fuel to the fire of my obsession. There was the fact that I couldn’t go to a real competitive gym because their afterschool classes started too early for someone with the longer hours of a yeshiva student. Or that leotards posed a religious problem to someone who wore <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/practices/Ethics/Our_Bodies/Clothing/Modesty.shtml">only skirts</a> and longer sleeved skirts outside of the gym. And nearly all competitions took place on <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/practices/Ritual/Shabbat_The_Sabbath.shtml">Shabbos</a>. When it came to the lower level ones, I simply wasn’t allowed to compete. As for the elite, televised ones—I had to learn how to program the VCR so I could eventually watch them after the stars came out on Saturday night. All of these limitations imposed by Judaism simply made me want to do and think about the sport even more. I like to imagine that if I had been totally unfettered by religious doctrine, I probably would’ve left the sport behind when it became apparent that I simply wasn’t any<br />
good at it.</p>
<p>During one after class <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/practices/Ethics/Our_Bodies/Health_and_Healing/Smoking_Alcohol_and_Drugs.shtml">drinking sessions</a> at a local bar, my workshop professor, who had been subjected to a semester-long barrage of gymnastics, tipsily looked me in the eye and said, “You’ve got this whole <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Literature/Jewish_American_Literature/1970-2000/Chaim_Potok.shtml">Potok</a> thing going on. Except with a weird thing about gymnastics.”</p>
<p>While my personal essay collection, <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Heresy-High-Beam-Confessions-ebook/dp/B00804NIMK/ref=215live365-20">Heresy on the High Beam: Confessions of an Unbalanced Jewess</a>,</em> bears little resemblance to Potok’s novels—fiction vs. nonfiction, male vs. female protagonists, different eras—I’d like to think that perhaps had Potok been enamored with gymnastics instead of the national pastime then maybe Reuven Malter, the main character in <em><a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Film/American_and_European/The_Chosen.shtml">The Chosen</a></em>, would’ve hit his head on the balance beam instead of getting nailed in the eye by a baseball. That would’ve been cool.</p>

		<title>Montefiore’s Ramsgate</title>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div><a href="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/moses-montefiore-jewish-liberator-imperial-hero" target="_blank"><img class="alignright" src="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/bookimages/moses.montefiore.JPG" alt="" width="171" height="250" /></a>Sunday June 17th will be Montefiore day in <a href="http://www.montefioreendowment.org.uk/sirmoses/ramsgate" target="_blank">Ramsgate</a>, the faded seaside resort where Sir Moses and his wife Judith lived for nearly fifty years. Ramsgate was incorporated in 1884, the year Montefiore turned 100, and the town’s most distinguished resident donated the new mayor’s chain of office &#8211; gold, as you would expect, but rather surprisingly made up of the Hebrew letter Mem, Montefiore’s own initial. For the first time in many years, Ramsgate has its own mayor again – and the chain has reminded him of the town’s distinctive Jewish heritage. So Ramsgate has launched a Montefiore Heritage Society, and is inviting the great and good to commemorate the opening of Montefiore’s private synagogue there on June 17, 1833.</div>
<div>It’s good to see the town embracing its Jewish past because it hasn’t always been thus. And yet to Victorians, Montefiore and Ramsgate were synonymous. Before Montefiore’s arrival, this was a typical English working port, with a good beach and some gracious Georgian housing. By his death it had acquired not just a synagogue, but a replica of the <a href="http://www.keverrachel.com/" target="_blank">Tomb of Rachel</a> (where Montefiore mourned his own lamented Judith), a range of Jewish schools and boarding houses, and something called the Lady Judith Theological College, which was a cross between a yeshiva and an Oxford college. And of course there was East Cliff Lodge itself: Montefiore’s home, a neo-Gothic gentleman’s residence that was at once typically Victorian and full of the most extraordinary Judaica.</div>
<div>My cousin Robin Sebag-Montefiore was born in East Cliff Lodge, and my mother’s elderly relatives can still remember playing in its fabulous gardens during their school holidays. Others have told me how the whole Jewish community was invited to the house for <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/holidays/Jewish_Holidays/Sukkot/At_Home.shtml" target="_blank">Sukkot</a>, and of the wonderful tea parties held on its lawns. But Robin’s father died when he was 3, and his young widow sold the house and much of its contents. Like so many grand houses it fell into decay – occupied by the army during the Second World War, sold to the Borough of Ramsgate in 1952 and demolished in 1954. All that remains now are <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mark_milham/4145187950/" target="_blank">the greenhouses</a> – ambitious, curved, glass buildings that predate the Crystal Palace. The Judith College suffered a similar fate. It was training North African rabbis as late as the 1950s, but demolished in 1961, when the Sephardi community chose to transfer its activities to London.</div>
<div>And so it is that I mostly associate Ramsgate with funerals. Because the Montefiores are the only members of London’s Sephardi community who still chose to be buried here. It’s strange visiting a cemetery where so many family members are buried close together, and its strange burying so many family members so far away from their loved ones that for most of the year their graves lie forgotten and unvisited.</div>
<div>I’m glad there are others now to remember the Montefiore past: to visit the greenhouses, and to walk down the steep footpath, past the synagogue and on towards the cemetery; to stop for a pint at <a href="http://montefiorearms.co.uk/montefiorearms/" target="_blank">The Montefiore Arms</a> before heading on to catch a glimpse of the sea.</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-637" title="moses.montefiore" src="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/files/2012/05/moses.montefiore.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="305" />For the past ten years I’ve been travelling the world in Moses Montefiore’s footsteps. This was a man who spent much of his (long) life on the road: besides the usual round of European tourist destinations (Paris, Florence, Rome, Frankfurt and Berlin), he visited <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/hot_topics/ht/Jerusalem.shtml" target="_blank">Jerusalem</a> seven times in total and passed through innumerable Jewish communities as he embarked on politically motivated missions to places like St. Petersburg, Istanbul, Marrakesh and Bucharest.</p>
<p>But what does it mean to travel in the footsteps of a man who’s been dead for over 120 years, and why bother? After all, it’s impossible to recreate the nineteenth century travel experience in our world of cars, planes and high-speed trains. (I once met a Reform Rabbi who followed the Montefiores’ route during their first trip abroad; apparently it was very scenic, involving only minor roads.) More to the point, most of the places Montefiore visited have changed beyond all recognition. It’s not just that Bucharest is full of shabby, Ceausescu high-rise flats, or that a whole quarter of Marrakesh is devoted to glitzy hotels. The real problem is more fundamental. The shifting currents of world history mean that places that were once heartlands of the <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Jewish_World_Today/Jews_Around_the_Globe.shtml" target="_blank">diaspora</a> are now barely Jewish places at all.</p>
<p>And yet, it was worth the trouble. I found no echo of Montefiore’s visit when I travelled through Poland and Lithuania, but the scale of Jewish absence helped me to understand the ways in which twentieth century developments had erased his achievements. Sitting through Shabbat services in <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/Early_Modern/roman-ghetto.shtml" target="_blank">Rome</a>’s empty Great Synagogue and the even emptier Choral Temple in Bucharest, I could not fail to notice the ways in which synagogue architecture paid tribute to the aesthetic values of the non-Jewish world. Nothing could have prepared me for the florid extravagance of the former or the delicate, Byzantine beauty of the latter – surely the most beautiful synagogue in which I have ever been privileged to sit. Only retracing the boundaries of Rome’s ancient Ghetto could have shown me how pitifully small it was. Only by visiting the tiny Moroccan sea-port of Essaouira could I appreciate the rocky isolation of this wealthy entrepot that was once home to so many of <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Jewish_World_Today/Jews_Around_the_Globe/jewish-morocco.shtml" target="_blank">Moroccan Jewry</a>’s financial and commercial elite.</p>
<p>If anything, then, I regret the places I left unvisited. <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Ancient_and_Medieval_History/539_BCE-632_CE/The_Diaspora.shtml" target="_blank">Damascus and Alexandria</a> are only names to me. But if I close my eyes I can see the golden sands of the beach that is the old Jewish cemetery of Essaouira; I can see the crumbling stone fantasies of the Jewish cemetery in Warsaw; and I can see streets of the old Jewish quarter in Vilna, empty now but in Montefiore’s day teeming with vibrant, impoverished, contentious Jewish life.</p>

<p>What makes a good biography? I thought about this question a lot when I was writing my book about Moses Montefiore, and I’ve been thinking about it again recently. As a historian, my preference has always been for biographies that illuminate the broader context – books like <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/ix_author.php?aid=46782">Elisheva Carlebach</a>’s <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Pursuit-Heresy-Rabbi-Sabbatian-Controversies/dp/0231071906/ref=215live365-20">The Pursuit of Heresy</a></em>, which brought the world of the itinerant Jerusalem <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/beliefs/Theology/Afterlife_and_Messiah/Messianism/mysticalmessianism.shtml">rabbi Moses Hagiz</a> so vividly to life, or <em><a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1035885/">Perfecting the World</a></em> – a wonderful book about Montefiore’s life-long friend, the Quaker philanthropist and physician Thomas Hodgkin.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-625" href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/2012/05/07/historians-biographers/mosesmontefiore-012612/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-625" title="mosesmontefiore-012612" src="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/files/2012/05/mosesmontefiore-012612.jpg" alt="" width="288" height="421" /></a>Of course, such books don’t necessarily make for easy reading.</p>
<p>A couple of weeks ago I contributed to <em><a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/features/in-our-time/">In Our Time</a></em>, one of the most popular and long-lived discussion programs on British radio. The subject was <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/beliefs/Theology/Thinkers_and_Thought/Jewish_Philosophy/Philosophies/Modern/Moses_Mendelssohn.shtml">Moses Mendelssohn</a>, a fascinating character about whom I know rather less than I should. Preparing for this broadcast, I came across Shmuel Feiner’s brilliantly readable <a href=" http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/moses-mendelssohn-sage-of-modernity">little biography</a> of the German-Jewish philosopher, which just came out in the Yale Jewish Lives series. I loved the way it opened with youths throwing stones at Mendelssohn and his family as they walked down Unter den Linden, Berlin’s smartest promenade; and ended, by alluding both to this episode and to German Jewry’s terrible future. Indeed, it’s hard to believe that this pearl of a book was<br />
written by the author of <em><a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/Emancipation_and_Enlightenment.shtml">The Jewish Enlightenment</a></em>, a superb piece of scholarship but famously heavy-going.</p>
<p>Biographers tend to get bogged down in detail, and my own book is no exception. Something about the brief, interpretative format of the Yale series seems to have liberated Feiner. He tells us everything we need to know about Mendelssohn’s thought and brings the man to life, all in about 70,000 words. Each of which is precious. It’s a far cry from Altmann’s classic, 900 page intellectual biography and infinitely more enlightening.</p>
<p>Feiner’s elegantly concise approach contrasts starkly with the other biography I’m reading at the moment: Jonathan Steinberg’s psychologically driven Bismarck, which I’m reviewing for the <em>European History Quarterly. </em>It’s a bulky volume, and like me he had difficulty cutting a life down to size. Steinberg’s earlier books, such as <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/All-Nothing-Axis-Holocaust-1941-43/dp/0415290694/ref=215live365-20">All or Nothing: the Axis and the Holocaust</a></em> seemed to me to ask the right questions (why did the Italians and the Germans behave differently during the <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Themes/holocaust.shtml">Holocaust</a>?) without coming up with really satisfactory answers. This time, however, he seems to have struck gold. The style is genuinely sparkling, and focusing on an individual rather than broader societal structures seems to play to Steinberg’s strengths. Two things that resonated for me were Steinberg’s emphasis on the emotional dimension of Bismarck’s approach to politics and the way in which the story of Bismarck’s life was intertwined with the evolving and deeply ingrained hostility Junkers like Bismarck felt towards Jews as alien symbols of change and modernity.</p>
<p>Oddly then, these are both books about the German-Jewish symbiosis. Despite their different qualities, they share the same fundamental virtue. Both Feiner and Steinberg are drawing on a lifetime of knowledge &#8211; and you can tell that in writing these biographies they had the time of their lives.</p>

<p>Dressed in ornate plains <em>schmattes</em> (including war bonnet), and astride a paint pony, Brooks and his warriors come upon a prairie schooner carrying an African-American family. “Chief” Brooks looks at the little group as they huddle together in terror, and then turns to his closest companion who is raising his tomahawk to strike:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>No, no, zayt nisht meshuge! Loz im geyn! Abi gezint! Take off! Hosti gezen in dayne lebn? (Don’t be crazy! Let him go. As long as you’re healthy! Take off! Have you ever seen such a thing?).</em></p></blockquote>
<p>The “chief” lets the family go in peace, quickly stating the reason for his mercy:</p>
<p>“They darker than us!”</p>
<p>It’s either funny or offensive depending upon who’s watching; but for many, it’s the only reference to Jews and Indians they’ve ever seen.</p>
<p>Pity &#8211; because there <em>was</em> a bone fide Jewish Indian chief. His is a tale of guts and brains, as are most stories about Jews among the Indians.</p>
<p>Almost from the beginning of Westward expansion, Jews have made <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/America_at_the_Turn_of_the_Century/Regional_Judaism/Peddlers_and_Frontier_Judaism.shtml" target="_blank">a home on the range</a>. They were fur trappers, gold miners, cowboys, peddlers and scouts. There were sheriffs, marshals, mayors of small towns and at least one gunfighter. A <em>shana medele</em> from San Francisco married Wyatt Earp; a storekeeper from Bavaria and a tailor from Latvia invented blue jeans.</p>
<p>Czechoslovakian émigré Sigmund Schlesinger was one such pioneer. After losing his job in Philadelphia, Schlesinger went to eastern Kansas where he found work on the railroad, only to be laid off again when hostile Sioux took charge of the tracks. Needing work, he volunteered to be an Indian Scout for the Army, despite never having ridden a horse or shot a gun. A quick study, he became a hero of the Battle of Breecher’s Island, Colorado, said by some to be the most ferocious in the history of the Indian Wars.</p>
<p>Years after the battle, his commanding officer wrote to Rabbi Henry Cohen of Galveston, Texas:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>He had never been in action prior to our fight with the Indians and throughout the whole engagement which was one of the hardest, if not the very hardest, ever fought on the Western plains, he behaved with great courage, cool persistence and a dogged determination that won my unstinted admiration as well as that of his comrades, many of whom had seen service throughout the War of Rebellion on one side or the other.</em></p>
<p><em>I can accord him no higher praise than that he was the equal of many in courage, steady and persistent devotion to duty, and unswerving and tenacious pluck of any man in my command.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>But not all Jews encountered the Indians in battle. Some were among their closest friends – and became trusted advocates for their rights and freedoms.</p>
<p>Such a man was <a href="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/_blog/The_ProsenPeople/post/A_Jewish_Magician_at_the_Egyptian_Theatre/" target="_blank">Julius Meyer</a>, the hero of my novel <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1605983691/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jewboocou-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1605983691" target="_blank">Magic Words</a>, </em>born in Bromberg, Prussia in 1851.</p>

<p>Meyer came to the United States in 1866. In Europe, he had been a <em>yeshiver bocher</em> and a talented musician. Shortly after his arrival, he joined his older brothers Max, Adolph and Moritz in Omaha where they had a prospering cigar and jewelry business. Separate from his brothers, Julius began trading with Indian tribes like the Ponca, Omaha, and Sioux. So well known did he become for his honesty that the Indians dubbed him “Box-Ka-Re-Sha-Hash-Ta-Ka: “the curly-headed chief who speaks with one tongue.”</p>
<p>According to Julius, in 1869, a hostile tribe attacked him. They tried to kill him – and it was only the intercession of Standing Bear, chief of the Ponca, that saved his life. Julius became Standing Bear’s interpreter and was soon translating for such famous chiefs as Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, and Swift Bear.</p>
<p>For many years, Meyer served as Omaha’s government Indian agent, often fighting for Native rights. Julius was also known as a man who knew how to make a dollar for his friends (and himself). One such scheme involved taking Standing Bear and a group of the Ponca on a yearlong jaunt to the 1889 Paris Exposition where they caused a sensation.</p>
<p>Julius kept up his association with Standing Bear and the Nebraska tribes until May 10, 1909 – the day he was discovered dead in Omaha’s Hanscom Park. He was clutching a revolver and had two bullet holes in him: one in his temple and another in his chest. He was legally declared a suicide, although to this day, there are people who believe that this great Jewish friend of the Indian was murdered.</p>
<p>Still, if Julius Meyer was an <em>honorary</em> Indian, <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/America_at_the_Turn_of_the_Century/Regional_Judaism/Peddlers_and_Frontier_Judaism/Native_Americans_and_Jews/Don_Solomono.shtml" target="_blank">Solomon Bibo</a> became the real thing: real enough, in fact, to become a chief.</p>
<p>Bibo was born in Westphalia in what is now Germany, in 1853. Like Meyer, he immigrated in 1869 and joined his brothers in business. The Bibos were among Santa Fe, New Mexico’s most successful traders, known for square dealing with their Indian neighbors. Bibo and his brothers became speakers of several Indian dialects and Solomon was often called upon by the Acoma Pueblo to negotiate treaties between their tribe and the U.S. government.</p>
<p>In 1885, Bibo married Juana Valle, the granddaughter of an Acoma chief. Later that year, the Acoma elected Bibo their new “governor,” the equivalent of tribal chief &#8211; a position he held four times. He helped create the tribe’s first modern education system, hired its first schoolteacher and supervised the first Acoma school building.</p>

<p>Solomon and Juana were married for nearly fifty years and had six children. Years before, she had converted to Judaism. At 13, their son, Leroy became a traditional <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/life/Life_Events/BarBat_Mitzvah/About_BarBat_Mitzvah.shtml" target="_blank">Bar Mitzvah</a> but also participated in the Acoma rituals of manhood. The couple was separated only by his death on May 4, 1934; they are buried side-by-side in a Jewish Cemetery in Colma, California.</p>

<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-607" href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/2012/05/02/a-jewish-magician-at-the-egyptian-theatre/magic-words/"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-607" title="magic.words" src="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/files/2012/05/magic.words_.jpg" alt="" width="167" height="250" /></a>A lot of times I haven’t had a good answer; but in the case of my new novel, <em><em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1605983691/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=myjewishlearn-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=1605983691" target="_blank">Magic Words</a></em></em>, the lightning bolt of creativity hit me in the midst of pursuing one of the most American of all activities.</p>
<p>I was <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Film/television.shtml">watching TV</a>.</p>
<p>The program was a PBS documentary “<a href="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/the-jewish-americans-three-centuries-of-jewish-voices-in-america">The Jewish Americans</a>;” and a nice little show it was, too. All of the Yiddishe luminaries were included: <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Literature/Jewish_American_Literature/Immigrant_Literature/Abraham_Cahan.shtml">Abraham Cahan</a> and <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Music/American_Jewish_Music/Songs_By_American_Jews.shtml">Irving Berlin</a>; <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Literature/Jewish_American_Literature/Poetry/Emma_Lazarus.shtml">Emma Lazarus</a> and <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/elcms/jewniverse/rapping-seinfeld.shtml">Jerry Seinfeld</a>; Jacob Adler and <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/culture/2/Sports/Sports_and_Judaism/America/Baseball/Hank_Greenberg.shtml">Hank Greenberg</a> and I guess, a coupla doctors and scientists.</p>
<p>Then there was the young man in buckskins. He only appeared for about 10 seconds in the show: short, with curly hair and a droopy moustache, he stood proudly behind four Indian chiefs in a posed studio photograph taken sometime in the 1880’s.</p>
<p><img src="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/conversation/Kolpan/Julius%20Meyer%20Sitting%20Bull.jpg" alt="julius meyer" width="250" align="left" />The voiceover said that the kid was one Julius Meyer, a <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/Emigration/To_America.shtml">Jewish immigrant</a> who became a famed translator for many <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/elcms/jewniverse/thanksgiving.shtml">Native American tribes</a>: or words to that effect.</p>
<p>I was amazed: a boychik from Europe who somehow gained the confidence of a group of people rightly suspicious of the white man? An Israelite adventurer who once conversed with the free-living masters of the mountains and plains?</p>
<p>As the photograph faded from the screen, I knew I had found the subject of my next novel. All I needed now was a little research.</p>
<p>Not that Julius was easy to track down. He was, to say the least, obscure. There wasn’t very much about him on the Internet (he still has no Wikipedia page); so I had to search for him in more traditional ways. I wrote to Jewish historical societies; I haunted libraries and perused photo collections.</p>
<p>And the more I discovered about Julius, the more fascinating he became.</p>
<p>Born in Bromberg in what is now Poland; immigrated to America after the <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/2012/03/13/writing-the-civil-war-in-jerusalem/">Civil War</a> to join his brothers who were merchant princes in Nebraska; captured by the Ponca and eventually made their interpreter; named Box-ka-re-sha-hash-ta-ka (“Curly-headed white chief with one tongue”), by the greatest chieftain who ever lived; Indian agent and trader; speaker of seven Siouxan dialects.</p>
<p>But two facts really sold me on Julius. First, there were the circumstances of his death. He was found dead around noon in Hanscom Park in Omaha in the Spring of 1909 &#8211; with one bullet in his breast and another in his head -and declared a suicide. The possibilities around that almost wrote themselves.</p>
<p>Then, in an article in the September 10, 1926 issue of <em>The American Hebrew</em>, I read that Julius brought a magician named “Herman the Great” to a Ponca camp to perform for the great Standing Bear and his people – and about how that night as Alexander slept, a young brave attempted to kill him for his hat, believing it to be the source of his mystic power.</p>
<p>For me, this was like that one good gift at <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/holidays/Jewish_Holidays/Hanukkah.shtml">Chanukkah</a>. A magician? I’m there!</p>
<p>And it got even better. Further research revealed that “Herman” was in fact, Alexander Herrmann, the most famous magician in the world before <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1914-1948/American_Jewry_Between_the_Wars/cultural_life/harryhoudini.shtml">Houdini</a> and the creator of many of the famous stage illusions still amazing audiences today; the inventor of the “Cake From A Hat” and the &#8220;Floating Boy&#8221;; the wizard who sold out the Egyptian Theatre in London for 1000 straight nights.</p>
<p>I knew I had found my second leading man; and when I discovered that Alexander’s mother’s maiden name was Meyer, I used my author’s prerogative to declare them cousins. Besides…how else would a humble man of the plains like Julius know a prestidigitator of such distinction?</p>
<p>A year and a half later, I had a book. All because of 10 seconds of TV that provided a tantalizing glimpse of a man who was a member of the tribe…in more ways than one.</p>

I was writing a passage in which one of my main characters, Julius Meyer, walks into an overheated shack seeking shelter from the cold. Inside that shack was Prophet John.</p>
<p>Sure, Julius was surprised, by not half as surprised as me. I had no idea who John was, what he was doing in that shack or why he was in my book. I had to write him to find out.</p>
<p>The story of Eli Gershonson, a Jewish peddler in the Old West, is just the opposite. He took a long and circuitous route to his supporting role in <em>Magic Words</em>.</p>
<p>Eli started life in my little son’s bedroom. He was part of an imaginary gang of “protectors” I would tell Ned about at bedtime; their job was to fight off his nightmares.</p>
<p>The group included the Bagel Man (the hero of a song I made up), the Guys Up The Street (some tough dudes who hung at 2<sup>nd</sup> &amp; Kenilworth, our Philadelphia corner), and Eli Gershonson, Esq., a lawyer who would take the bad dreams to court if they dared bother my boy (nothing like a lawsuit to scare off Freddy Krueger).</p>
<p>It may sound a bit elaborate, but most nights, it worked.</p>
<p>Cut to 15 years later.</p>
<p>I was writing my first novel, <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003D7JSUA/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=myjewishlearn-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B003D7JSUA" target="_blank">Etta</a>, </em>and found myself in need of a name for a character – a Jewish peddler of the type who roamed the West by the hundreds at the turn of the century<em>.</em> By this time, my son was 21 and no longer needed a nightside attorney, so I appropriated Mr. Gershonson’s moniker, revoked his law degree and gave him a wagon filled with pots, pans, cloth, needles, pins and other <em>chazerai</em>. In the end, he appeared in less than two pages in the book, but that was all he needed to advance the plot.</p>
<p>I figured that was my farewell to Eli.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003D7JSUA/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=myjewishlearn-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B003D7JSUA" target="_blank"><img class="alignleft" src="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/bookimages/etta.jpg" alt="" width="173" height="250" /></a>Then, in 2009, when I was writing <em>Magic Words,</em> I needed a name and background for <em>another </em>Jewish peddler who would be Julius Meyer’s uncle in the book. He needed to be patient, honest, and kind, but with a quiet authority.</p>
<p>I soon realized that the character I was envisioning had all of the qualities of the character I already had.</p>
<p>So, Eli Gershonson jumped from my first book to my second, pots and pan intact, though shedding some 30 years in the transition. In <em>Magic Words, </em>his part isn’t a page-and-a-half cameo, but a major role woven throughout the narrative. In fact, he’s one of the last characters we see in the book.</p>
<p>I’m thankful to Eli for allowing me to move him from one story to the next. His presence gave my two books a kind of crazy continuity, not to mention that I was afforded the great pleasure of getting to know him better.</p>
<p>Believe me, he’s a <em>mensch</em>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>These days, when people write a book, they invariably have an acknowledgments page, where they thank a few people or&#8211;like someone going on and on at the Oscars&#8211;everyone they ever knew, down to the babysitter who once braided their hair in elementary school. My own acknowledgements page for my most recent book thanks my first readers&#8211;the friends who commented on my stories in draft&#8211;and the artist colonies that offered me an extended time to write.</p>
<p><img src="http://blog.thesohotel.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/030508tenement1.jpg" alt="tenement museum" align="right" />Now that I think about it, and think about it in terms of what really enabled me to do what I needed to do, I realize I should also have thanked New York’s <a href="http://www.tenement.org/">Tenement Museum</a>. The museum consists of a modern visitor center at 103 Orchard Street and a tenement at <a href="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/book/97-orchard">97 Orchard</a> that has been “restored”&#8211;or perhaps safely kept in its earlier dismal condition. The rooms have been furnished as they were during the years (1863-1935), when the tenement was occupied.</p>
<p>This may sound drearily like any number of museums, where you stand behind a rope while you look at a Victorian bedroom or see the trundle bed where Melville’s children slept. But it is nothing of the sort. Instead the tour guide who takes you into 97 Orchard Street (you can’t just wander alone) tells you the story of one of the <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/Emigration/To_America.shtml">immigrant families</a> who once lived there. And at least some of those immigrants were Jewish.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft" src="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/files/2012/04/pretty.girl_.jpg" alt="" width="167" height="250" />The Museum gave me the very thing that I needed to write: a sense of the lived life, the specifics of daily existence. I have at times got buried in, and distracted by, my efforts at verisimilitude. I have tried to do research for books and only learned how much I don’t know, how there was no way I could write my book unless I had more courage, more of an ability to ask people who I didn’t know what their lives were like. But intruth you don’t need to know everything to write a story or novel. You just need enough to convince. In an <a href="http://www.identitytheory.com/jim-shepard/">interview</a> on identitytheory.com, the fiction writer Jim Shepard talks about the role of research in fiction this way:</p>
<p><em>Henry James said, ‘She had eyes like this and a nose like this.’ And you go, ‘I could really see her.’ You have two details! Theoretically you could do the same thing with the Battle of Antietam, right? If you get the right details. Part of the point of all that research is not, ‘Oh, I am going to be able to deploy more details.’ It’s that I am more likely to come across those two.”</em></p>
<p>What The Tenement Museum gave me were the details, ironically enough, to imagine where my characters lived. I only used two things from the visit to the Museum: a detail about where toilets were placed in a tenement and what the lay out of an apartment might be like, but, in my head, the whole world was quite vivid. I could see it all, and hopefully my readers can as well.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Should I show my husband my work? My sister? My mother? Students sometimes ask me this. Go ahead, I say. Just don’t be too eager to listen to your family members’ opinions about your fiction. Parents and siblings bring too much non-literary baggage to their reading, so they’re not the ones to turn to for clearheaded advice. Which is a shame, I’ll be frank, because my mother thinks I’m a genius. My siblings are kind (though not uniformly) about my work. There are a few comments, over the years, that hurt at the time, that pain <img class="alignright" title="pretty.girl" src="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/blog/members-of-the-scribe/files/2012/04/pretty.girl_.jpg" alt="" width="167" height="250" />me less in retrospect. Here’s one that just interested me. My mother read a few stories of mine (in draft) and then asked, “Why do all your characters have to be Jewish?” She wasn’t asking this about the stories where there was a clear answer. If the story concerned Jews on the <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/history/Modern_History/1700-1914/America_at_the_Turn_of_the_Century/Eastern_European_Immigration/Lower_East_Side/lower-east-side-now.shtml" target="_blank">Lower East Side</a> or a <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/practices/Ritual/Prayer/Synagogue_and_Religious_Leaders/What_is_a_Rabbi.shtml">rabbi</a> (as two of the stories in my most recent collection do), then that was fine. What she was asking was about the other stories. The ones with no clear Jewish content, where I nonetheless had made the characters Jewish. The story about the faltering marriage in Baltimore, the one about the cousins living together in a Cambridge apartment when Vaclav Havel’s press secretary comes to visit? They didn’t<em>have </em>to be Jewish, did they?</p>
<p>And the truth is, no, they didn’t. There was nothing in the stories that necessitated me clarifying their cultural heritage or spiritual lives. Still, even if I did edit the explicit mention of Jewishness out, as I did in some cases&#8211;because my mother was right it really didn’t need to be there&#8211;the characters remained Jewish in my head.</p>
<p>Why, exactly? I could say that I have spent my whole life as a Jew, even if as a completely secular one, and that is the lens through which I see the world, but I have spent my whole life as a woman, and I find myself able to write from a man’s point of view. I have spent my whole life as an identical twin, and I only once wrote about a character who is an identical twin. I think it has more to do with the immediate kinship that I feel with some Jews, the sense that we share a sensibility. Intelligence, warmth, self-deprecating humor, liberal politics, <a href="http://www.myjewishlearning.com/holidays/Jewish_Holidays/Shavuot/At_Home/Foods/Rugelach.shtml" target="_blank">rugelach</a>, <a href="http://www.jewishbookcouncil.org/books/" target="_blank">books</a>, and black and white cookies occupy the same place in our hearts. Which is to say that we highly value them. OK, well, maybe not the black-and-white cookies, not for all Jews. I can see that might be a debatable point. And everyone doesn’t share my politics, I know. But you get the idea. There’s a certain coziness I feel with other Jews, and it’s a coziness I like to feel with my characters. My characters are in a quite literal way (of course) “my people.” So, no surprise, I suppose, that they should resemble my people in a larger sense, the ones I come from and the ones for whom I feel a special affection.</p>
