Challah for Parashat Yitro

Mount Sinai in smoke.

Commentary on Parashat Yitro, Exodus 18:1 - 20:23

Every week, Julie Seltzer, artist and Torah scribe, bakes a challah depicting an aspect of the week’s Torah portion.

And they stood at the foot of the mountain and Mount Sinai was all in smoke (Exodus 19:17-18).
וַיִּתְיַצְּבוּ בְּתַחְתִּית הָהָר וְהַר סִינַי עָשַׁן כֻּלּוֹ

challah for yitro

The people are standing at the foot of the mountain and the word “smoke–עשן” appears above them. Each of the letters in this word, Ayin, Shin, and Nun, take three decorative crowns in Torah script. You can see the crowns here as billowing fire!
